El merolico will be performed by Efe Tres Teatro on Oct. 19.

The Mexican theater company, Efe Tres Teatro, comes to campus on Oct. 19 to perform El merolico at 7 p.m. in Scripps Hall, room 111.

The performance is based on three plays originally published in 1613 by the Spanish writer, Miguel de Cervantes: El viejo celoso (The Jealous Old Man), El retablo de las maravillas (The Puppet Show of Wonders) and La cueva de Salamanca (The Cave of Salamanca). To ensure a broader audience, English subtitles will be shown during the performance.

Efe Tres Teatro’s interpretation of these interludes is an excellent opportunity for students and other members of the university community to enhance their understanding of how Spanish classical theater is adapted for modern audiences. It is often difficult to attend live productions, and performances of Spanish Classical plays in U.S. productions are usually performed by Latin American and Spanish theater troupes who tend to only visit major cities or theater festivals.

Bringing Efe Tres Teatro to Ohio University represents a unique opportunity that students are unlikely to have otherwise. The performance of El merolico will be followed by a conversation led by faculty members from the Modern Languages Department, including Dr. Emilia Alonso (Spanish), Dr. Christopher Coski (French), Dr. Molly Morrison (Italian), and Dr. Bärbel Such (German).

This event has been organized through the efforts of Dr. Melissa Figueroa and has received financial support from the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Fine Arts, the Scripps College Diversity Committee, the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, the Modern Languages Department, Latin American Studies, Arts for Ohio, Sigma Delta Pi, Mill Street Village and El Camino Mexican Restaurant.
