Mitchell Smith, Ph.D. candidate in the History Department and a Contemporary History Institute student, joined the 2018 class of legislative fellows last November at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, and the fellowship led to a full-time position.

The fellowship consists of 24 fellows who are placed with legislators in the Ohio General Assembly, the Legislative Service Commission, or the Ohio Government Channel.

Smith was selected to work on the education policy research team at the Legislative Service Commission, a nonpartisan agency that provides drafting, fiscal, research, training, code revision, and other services to the Ohio General Assembly. He works alongside legislators and interested parties to draft legislation and conduct research on topics concerning Ohio preschools, elementary and secondary schools, and institutions of higher education.

Smith was recently offered a full-time position to remain on the education policy team at the Legislative Service Commission and plans to continue his work there.

Smith is currently completing his dissertation under the direction of Dr Chester Pach, a project that analyzes grassroots pro-war groups during the Vietnam War.
