The Food Matters Club, a student organization associated with the Food Studies theme at Ohio University, made a group trip to the Athens Farmers Market on Sept. 22.
While many club members attend the market regularly, for some club members, the visit was their first time experiencing the Athens Farmers Market.
Food Matters Club plans to make these group trips more regular, hoping to continue to expose new students to the Athens Farmers Market, encourage carpooling there, and provide transportation for students without cars.
An important goal of Food Matters Club is to connect Ohio University students with the Athens community, and particularly the vibrant food culture in Athens.
“This was my first time going to the farmers market, and now I want to make it a Saturday routine. There’s such a strong community in Athens, and the farmers market really represents that community, as well as the farming scene in Southeast Ohio,” said first-year club member Olivia Trickett ’21.
At the end of the morning visit, Food Matters Club members were excited with their purchases, which included a variety of things: tamales, fruit, tortilla chips, flowers, pastries, produce, and more.
In addition to future farmers market trips, club members are also hoping to make it out to the Chesterhill Produce Auction this fall.
