By Christopher Thompson
Associate Professor of Linguistics
Dear Linguistics faculty, staff, students and alumni,
Thank you so much for all your work during my time as the Chair of the Department of Linguistics these last nine years. I stepped down from that position in August, and Dr. David Bell is now the chair.
Much has changed in the department and at Ohio University since 2009. Together we have transitioned from quarters to semesters, experienced budget cuts, and seen the departure of some outstanding colleagues who were also friends. However, many good things have also happened.
We continue to provide competitive and high-quality M.A., B.A., and foreign language programs. Many of our students have been accepted to competitive Ph.D. programs in this country and abroad, and many of our graduates have gotten good jobs both domestically and internationally.
The key to it all has been the faculty, students, administrators, and staff in the department, all of whom I will miss working with as I step down from this position. You’ll be in good hands, though, with David Bell.
This fall semester, I am in Japan, representing OHIO as the 43rd Miura Visiting Professor. (See “Thompson Headed to Japan as Miura Visiting Professor.”) But the Department of Linguistics won’t be far from my mind. I look forward to returning for spring semester as a full-time faculty member refreshed and recharged to continue to contribute toward the development of this wonderful department that has done so much with so little for so many over the years.
