The 13th Triennial Rural Women’s Studies Association Conference is May 17-19, 2018, at Ohio University. This year’s theme is “Surviving and Thriving: Gender, Justice, Power, and Placemaking,” focusing on the role of gender in rural community formation and survival.
Presenters will explore the ways that gendered identity (as women, men, or bi- and trans-) and raced identity (within separatist communities, segregated neighborhoods, or integrated spaces) affected personal power, individual choice, and community development historically and today. These subjects inform us about rural activism, business development, cultural expression, self-governance, and collective experiences locally, regionally, nationally, and globally.
Dr. Katherine Jellison, Professor and Chair of the Department of History at Ohio University, serves as a co-chairwoman of the Rural Women’s Studies Association. This year’s conference is especially exciting for her. “I’ve been hoping for many years that Ohio University would host the RWSA triennial conference,” she says. “This will be the first time that the conference is held in Appalachia, and it will be an excellent opportunity to showcase women’s economic, artistic, and literary activities in a part of the country that is frequently forgotten or misunderstood.”
