WILLARD – The Ohio Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution has selected Willard Middle School teacher Kyle von Kamp as the Outstanding American History Teacher of the Year. He was nominated by the Sally De Forest Chapter. Kyle lives in Ashland’s Center Street Historic District.
His journey to Willard Middle School was not a straight path. His love of history began in his youth and grew when he won the Ohio’s 4-H Genealogy Contest. Graduating from Ohio University with a degree in history, his passion for history was solidified after working a season at Hale Farm as a historic interpreter. He realized he wanted to teach after working two years with the Peace Corps in Senegal, West Africa.
At Willard, he has taught world cultures, financial literacy and current events. Presently, American history is his only instructional class. During the summer, he also teaches secondary students at an area summer migrant school.
He believes students should experience history and culture, and demonstrates those ideals through building rope beds, making period clothing, singing or playing period music, spinning thread using drop spindles, and marching using Baron von Steuben’s drill book. After a hiatus, von Kamp brought the Revolutionary War Reenactment back, providing students an opportunity to earn an overnight stay in period tents portraying a real person from that time period and enjoy a military ball with student performers.
