Science Café presents Dr. Ken Walsh on “Preparing for the Big One: Protecting Critical Infrastructure” on Wednesday, March 21, at 5 p.m. in the Baker Center Front Room Coffeehouse.
Walsh, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology, is part of a research community that is looking at ways to better protect civil infrastructure from the damaging effects of earthquakes.
“The challenges associated with mitigating the effects of earthquakes on civil engineering structures in the presence of strong earthquakes has forced engineers to think outside the box for innovative, technology-driven solutions,” Walsh said. Walsh and his students use a combination of small-scale experimentation and numerical simulation to explore new technologies for seismic protection.
Walsh will discuss the state-of-the-practice and state-of-the-art in seismic protection systems for reducing the vulnerability of buildings and bridges during earthquakes. He will highlight a few of the innovations that he and his students are working on to provide effective and reliable technologies to better protect structures, their contents, and most importantly, their occupants.
Sciencé Cafe events are held on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. in the Front Room at Baker University Center. They are free and open to students, faculty and staff. Science Café is a venue for students to share their interests informally during a conversation exchange in a friendly setting.
The Science Café is hosted by Dr. Sarah Wyatt, Professor of Environmental & Plant Biology and Vice President of the Ohio University Chapter of Sigma Xi, and Roxanne Malé-Brune, Director of Grant Development and Projects in the Office of the Vice President for Research and Creativity.
Science Café and Café Conversations are sponsored by the Office of Vice President for Research and Creativity and the Ohio University Chapter of Sigma Xi.
