Billie Frank ’18 stayed in Athens last summer to take some courses. She added an internship to her summer schedule by walking into the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Athens County and asking if they needed summer help.
“They did end up needing an intern because their regular interns had all gone home for the summer, so I was able to fill that need,” Frank said in an interview with the Career and Leadership Development Center at OHIO.
Frank is a Political Science major earning certificates in Law, Justice and Culture and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. And while she’s involved in a lot of organizations on campus, she really wanted some real-world professional experience.
“During this internship, I got acquainted with a legal office setting and dealt with some of the files and legal documents. I met judges and I was able to go to court proceedings to observe. The office also works a lot with Athens County Children Services, so I got to go over to those offices sometimes and interact with them,” she said.
“It helped my career goals more specifically because I figured out that I actually like working in a courthouse. I also understand more of the proceedings of the courthouse and how things work in real life,” she added.
As graduation nears, Frank said she will look for positions in election campaigns or local government.
Her advice to other Bobcats: “Utilize everything that Ohio University has to offer. Whether it’s professionally or academically, students might not use all the resources available to them. I’ve used the CLDC and the Allen Center for Academic Advising. Both of these offices helped me as a student and I think more students should utilize these resources.
“Your college experience will give you what you give it, so if you put a lot in you’ll get a lot back.”
