Between Love & Hate, OPIE | Teachers Talk about Social Stratification & Race in Brazil, Feb. 15

Ohio University’s Between Love and Hate theme presents Social Stratification & Race in Brazil on Thursday, Feb. 15, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Multi-Cultural Center Multipurpose Room (Baker 219).

Visiting educators from Brazil discuss the Brazilian education system, class, race and key Brazilian figures such as Maroon freedom fighter Zumbi Dos Palmares, and author of the classic text, Pedagogy of the Oppressed Paulo Friere.

The Brazilian Teachers were selected by the Brazilian Government to participate in a professional development program in the Ohio Program of Intensive English (OPIE) at OHIO. The panelists are all from the South and Southeast regions of Brazil and  have a range of seven to 23 years of teaching experience. Their educational backgrounds include degrees in language and teacher training, literature, and applied linguistics.

The five panelists are: Leandro Carmo, Cristina Carneiro, Juliana Pacheco, Heloisa Ribeiro, and Sylvia Ribeiro.

There are 14 additional Brazilian teachers here for this program. They will be in the audience and may also be able to provide additional perspectives as part of the discussion.
