Spalsbury provides some tips for how Arts & Sciences students
- Do a little online research into the Risk and Insurance industry. Applicants need to have a basic understanding of the profession and the various technical areas of expertise that are typically employed in enterprise risk management applications. Enterprise Risk Management is the holistic approach to reducing risk and its associated impacts to a business. It is a cradle-to-grave consideration of risk factors and tempering tactics that can be employed in a given industry or business operation.
- Do a little introspective exercise and look at your educational background. One needs to assess one’s knowledge strengths and where these would support a related field supporting a risk management agenda.
- Think creatively and “outside the box.” The arts and science world contains the vast majority of the technical skill sets needed by the supporting and ancillary industries. To name a few:
- Labor Management (written communication, interpersonal communication, relationship building)
- Product Liability (chemical formulations, product design, process design)
- Loss Control (psychology/behavioral modification, procedural development, training)
- Quality Assurance (statistical prep/analysis, metrics and trending, process analysis)
- Risk Transfer (insurance policy design, mathematics, actuarial evaluations)
- Quantitative Services (industrial hygiene, environmental sampling, forensic investigation, root cause analysis)
“All of these aspects come into play in the business world. Find a niche, understand your role, communicate the value,” he says.
