Linguistics students, faculty, and alumni enjoyed the College of Arts & Sciences’ second-annual Alumni and Student Networking Reception.
The delicious food and atmosphere in Baker Ballroom made for comfortable mingling and a productive setting for establishing connections. Several students and recent alumni happily posed for their free LinkedIn photos and spoke with faculty.
“At the Career Networking Day, I appreciated the opportunity to discuss my career aspirations and learn more about how other graduates from the Linguistics Department continued their education or found professional opportunities in teaching,” said Laura Gilbert, an undergraduate Linguistics major. “After graduating in May, I hope to assist in an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classroom, improve my language skills and integrate into a new community. I am hoping to live and work in a Spanish or Portuguese-speaking country and in one or two years pursue a master’s degree program related to the field of linguistics.”
For alumni and faculty, it was a night of friendship, fond memories, and new connections as well. Many alumni, spanning generations of graduates, attended and were introduced to each other through other alumni and faculty.
“It was great to see those old friends and classmates still on OHIO campus, either working as a faculty or staff, or studying in a Ph.D. program,” said Lu Cao, former LSOU (Linguistics Society of Ohio University) officer. “We shared our memories of the old times in the Linguistics M.A. program, and surprisingly we found that three of the LSOU leaders from different years are still working at OHIO University!”
Alumni, faculty, and students exchanged business cards to open the lines of communication with others to discuss different possibilities after graduation.
“I had the opportunity to meet someone from Communication and Development Studies, and I’ll share the contact information of a friend of mine working in NYC so she can do an internship there,” said Gabriela Castaneda.
Lara Wallace, faculty and alumna of the class of 2000, added that between the new Facebook page (@LingDeptOHIO) and this event, she hopes that this will be the start of increased communication among past, present, and future OHIO Linguistics students.
Career and Networking Week is an important annual event, and the Linguistics faculty, students and alumni look forward to attending in 2019 so that even more students, faculty, and alumni in the college take advantage of meeting people and talking about career plans.
