Using a J.D. for Social Justice and Non-Traditional Legal Careers
Assistant Dean of Students Darren Nealy and Cybele Smith, Director of Public Service & Public Interest Programs, from the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, will be on the Ohio University campus to discuss using a J.D. for social justice and non-traditional legal careers on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. in Grover W115.
Prior to the event, students can network with Nealy and Smith in an informal reception from 3:30 – 5 p.m. in the Center for Law, Justice & Culture where free pizza will be served.
They also will discuss life as a law student and answer questions students have about law school.
Nealy joined The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 2017 as Assistant Dean of Students. He previously spent four years with the University of Michigan Law School as Director of Student Services and five years with Capital University Law School as Director of Multicultural Affairs. Nealy served as both Executive Director and Legal Director of the Tobacco Public Policy Center at Capital University Law School as well. He is also a former Associate Attorney for Zeiger, Tigges & Little LLP and Zeiger & Carpenter LLP in Columbus. Nealy received his B.A. from the University of Dayton and his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law.
Smith is the Director of the Public Service Law Center at the Moritz College of Law and advises students who are interested in public interest and government sector jobs, honors programs, and fellowships. She coordinates the judicial clerkship application process and serves as the LRAP Coordinator. She also counsels students and alumni on how to land and change legal and JD preferred jobs and how to prepare for summer and permanent jobs and interacts with a variety of student groups and public and private sector employers. Smith also has the privilege of serving as the administrator of the Captain Jonathan D. Grassbaugh Veterans Project, which helps veterans facing legal issues in the areas of consumer law, landlord-tenant disputes, foreclosures and relief from default judgment. She hires student fellows and oversees the day to day operations of the project.
