Members of the Geological Sciences Alumni Advisory Board visited campus Nov. 17 to engage students in a hands-on field day involving the evaluation of a groundwater production well located in the Convocation Center parking lot.
The board maintains a close relationship with the faculty and students of the department through biennial visits to provide career advice, networking, and training.
The well was installed in the 1970s and has been used by many generations of Ohio University students to learn about environmental geology, but it is currently in need of repair.
The Alumni Advisory Board is working diligently with the department to see if this well can be restored and rejuvenated for use of current and future generations of students studying groundwater and environmental geology.
Before investigating the production well, the alumni board and well consultant performed a health and safety tailgate meeting for each group of visiting students. The students were able to observe equipment setup, disconnecting of the existing well head piping, and video survey and visual inspection of the existing well casing. In addition, we were able to collect water level gauging data and perform basic step draw-down tests.
This interactive experience provided students a real-world glimpse of working in the environmental consulting field. Additional evaluations of the well will be performed in the spring; stay tuned!
