Ohio University alum Dr. Jason Carthen ’93 has been busy!
He is an international best-selling author of three books, including his most recent, 52 Ways to Tackle Leadership for Your Success! And he created the I Speak Life Academy, which provides high-level training via an online learning portal.
In April 2017, Carthen joined the Forbes Coaches Council, an invitation-only community for leading business and career coaches, giving him the opportunity not only to network with peers, but also to submit articles and tips for Forbes.com.
“As I reflect on this tremendous honor,” Carthen said, “I recognize that my passion for speaking, executive coaching and leadership development is all about capturing the heart of people and helping them reach their personal best. The NFL taught me that we all need coaching at certain stages of our lives, but the true test is whether we will make the effort to obtain it and then act on the input we receive from that coach!”
Football with the New England Patriots
Carthen was recruited for Ohio University football in 1989. After earning B.A. in Sociology from the College of Arts & Sciences and a having very successful college football career as a Bobcat, he played for three years with the New England Patriots as an outside linebacker. He was injured in 1995 after signing as a free-agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

He played for NFL Europe for one more season, then as he says, he answered his true calling, “helping people to achieve their dreams in life and business.”
Return to Academia

He also returned to academia and earned an M.A. in Leadership and Christian Ministry from Malone University, soon followed by Certification in Business Management from Harvard Business School, and a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership from Regent University in 2009.

All this while he and his bride Mireidy Carthen grew their family of six daughters. They live outside Cleveland, Ohio.
