Food Matters, the student organization affiliated with the Food Studies theme, hosted guest speakers Laura and Jimmie Hendricks from Denali, Ala, on Nov. 27.
Laura Hendricks, an Ohio University alumni, and her husband, Jimmie, own an off-the grid sustainable farm where they spend half the year growing produce for their Community Supported Agriculture program, as well as a few local restaurants. They have spent many years hosting summer interns, many of which come from OHIO, as a way to educate future generations on the feasibility of a sustainable and self-created future.
Laura and Jimmie shared wholesome wisdom about the human capability of manifesting a life of intention, and how important that is to achieving lifelong happiness. They have found this for themselves by connecting to nature through Ayurvedic medicine, spending time in nature, and fostering a deep connection to their food.
The Hendricks really inspired the room of attendees by emphasizing that food is the most direct way humans can connect to the environment around them.
“We are incredibly thankful for their visit and hope to see them back in Athens soon!” says Dr. Theresa Moran, Assistant Professor and Food Studies theme director.
