Dr. Scott Powell ’05M, ’08P is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Global Studies Advisor at Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana.
Ever since he graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences at OHIO with his M.A. in Sociology and Ph.D. in Cultural Studies in Education from the College of Education, it has been his mission to help others experience the life improvements through education.

He firmly believes in Ohio University’s mission because he sees himself as a living example of how education can drastically improve lives, despite life’s constant struggles.
Powell credits his education at OHIO with his career as a published author and award winning educator, as well as his interest in global travel.
Teaching Excellence… and Service
He has received Ivy Tech’s President’s Award for Excellence in Instruction, the campus’s highest academic honor, and the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development NISOD Teaching Excellence Award.
He is a regular presenter in his fields, presenting at the Annual Bergamo Conference on Curriculum Theory and Classroom Practice, the Annual Conference of the Midwestern Educational Research Association, the International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence, and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences annual conferences.
Powell has served as a two-time Chair of the Statewide Social Science Curriculum Committee, Global Studies Coordinator at Ivy Tech, Inaugural Statewide Ivy Tech Faculty Council member, and three time President of the Terre Haute Campus Faculty Senate.
He is a graduate of the Master Teacher Seminar and Leadership from the Heart program and participated in the Global Learning Across Indiana Initiative.
While he is preparing to co-author both a criminology and a sociology textbook to be released in 2018, Powell has already published books on education and social issues.
Study Abroad and Promoting Diversity
Powell is passionate about expanding understanding of the world we live in and promoting diversity and takes advantage of opportunities to broaden his training and experience, including completing the Institute for Curriculum and Campus Internationalization at Indiana University program.
In 2017 he receive the Ivy Tech Diversity and Inclusion Award.
He volunteers as a diversity workshop facilitator at the City of Terre Haute Annual MLK Youth Summit and created a Global Studies Council at Ivy Tech that creates International events and presentations on campus.
For 2018, Powell received a Centers for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) Faculty Development Grant to teach and develop a Study Abroad Program. He has already traveled abroad with students in Study Abroad and his next trip scheduled for May.
“I constantly see myself in many of the students I serve,” Powell says.
