The Ohio University Honors Tutorial College selected Dr. Nukhet Sandal, Associate Professor of Political Science, as the recipient for the 2016-17 Outstanding Tutor Award.
Sandal is also Director of Global Studies in OHIO’s Center for International Studies.
Sandal has conducted 14 HTC tutorials and supervised two HTC theses since arriving at OHIO in fall 2013, working with students from Political Science, History, Environmental Studies, and Biological Sciences. She is also the recipient of the Grasselli Outstanding Teaching Award in 2016 and the University Professor Award in 2017.
Tutorials are the heart of the HTC program in Political Science. Students complete one tutorial per semester, either one-on-one or in a small group with a faculty tutor. Tutorials are tailored to fit each student’s research interests and complement existing courses offered at OHIO. There are currently 14 students enrolled in the HTC program in Political Science, and HTC students in other disciplines regularly seek out Political Science tutors. The HTC also awarded Dr. DeLysa Burner, Professor of Political Science, the Distinguished Mentor Award for 2016-2017.
Sandal teaches POLS 4590 Terrorism; POLS 4420 Middle East Politics; POLS 4570 Contemporary National Security, as well as a graduate core seminar and an introductory course on International Relations (POLS 2500). In Spring 2018, Sandal will teach UP 4901 Leadership and Conflict Resolution.
Sandal earned her Ph.D. in Politics and International Relations from University of Southern California in 2010, and she was a postdoctoral fellow at the Watson Institute of International Studies at Brown University from 2010-13. She is the author of Religious Leaders and Conflict Transformation (Cambridge University Press, 2017) and Religion and International Relations Theory (with Jonathan Fox; Routledge, 2013), and has published articles in the European Journal of International Relations, International Politics, Review of International Studies, Alternatives, Political Studies, West European Politics, Human Rights Quarterly, and Canadian Journal of Political Science.
