High school students can apply now for a free Summer Law & Trial Institute offered at Ohio University from July 9-21. The deadline for applications is June 3.
The Summer Law & Trial Institute is a 12-day immersive residential program that aims to increase understanding of the law and its possibilities among Ohio high school students from Southeast Ohio. The program also seeks to foster an interest in all aspects of legal education, service, and issues, and to create the next generation of legal, advocacy, and community professionals.
Interested students should apply online. The institute is run by the Center for Law, Justice & Culture at Ohio University.
Students will experience the justice system firsthand:
- Visit to Supreme Court of Ohio (Columbus) to observe oral arguments.
- Visit with legislators at the Ohio Statehouse (Columbus).
- Visit at Athens County Court of Common Pleas.
- Visit with non-governmental organizations, such as Southeastern Ohio Legal Services, American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio, and others.
- Meet and hear from Ohio attorneys and judges.
- Develop and present a trial in an actual courtroom.
Students will develop core critical legal skills, including:
- Analytical and legal reasoning
- Case analysis
- Negotiation
- Public speaking
- Professionalism
Students also will learn about:
- Making the transition from high school to college
- Exploring career opportunities in law
- Exploring undergraduate, graduate, and professional areas of legal study
- Team-building skills learned by presenting a trial with a group of peers
