“Athens might just be the center of craft beer in Ohio,” reports the Columbus Dispatch in an article headlined “RateBeer names Jackie O’s Ohio’s top brewery.”
Jackie O’s is owned by Ohio University alum Art Oestrike, who earned a B.A. in Russian and an M.A. in Linguistics from the College of Arts & Sciences. He also earned a B.S. in Education from the Patton College of Education.
The small town in Athens County, home of Ohio University, walked away with several awards from RateBeer’s annual craft beer festival. RateBeer is a website and mobile app that collects reviews of beers, pubs and breweries to give the public an idea of what the consensus is on a certain lager, stout or pale ale.
Jackie O’s won awards for best pub, taproom and top brewery in Ohio as well as for the top-rated Ohio beer, its Iced Coffee Apparition, an imperial stout aged on ground coffee beans. The beer has an overall 100 rating, which is as good as a beer can get.
Another Athens brewery, Little Fish, won the award for best new brewery in Ohio.
Jackie O’s added on to its production brewery last year, expanding its capacity and creating room for a larger sour beer program as well as covering its new roof with solar panels.
