Science Café presents Dr. Joseph Shields, Professor of Physics and Astronomy, discussing “The Quest for Supermassive Black Holes” on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at 5 p.m. in the Baker Center Front Room.
Black holes can be millions of times more massive than the sun, but their density and relative distance from Earth make the study of black holes difficult. Now, scientists believe that every significant galaxy has a supermassive black hole, which makes studying these extremely important.
Shields, who is Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate College at Ohio University, will discuss how astrophysicists locate supermassive black holes and determine their influence on their surroundings.
“The universe allows us to see phenomena that really stretches our mind,” Shields says. “This pushes us to imagine and conceive things that we never would have.”
