Mariel “Ellie” Koewler ’15 is the International Education Programs Senior Campus Coordinator for Ohio University on the Athens campus.

She earned a B.A. in Anthropology, a minor in Mathematics and a Latin American Studies Certificate from the College of Arts & Sciences.

Her primary role at IEP is to increase study abroad participation among OHIO students through student advising, connecting faculty to logistical support for their faculty-led programs, and collaborating with the Office of Global Opportunities to develop marketing and outreach initiatives.

Koewler’s favorite part of her job is working for an organization that aligns with her passion for global experiences.

“I loving supporting students and faculty in achieving their study abroad goals, connecting them to resources, and contributing to a more globally engaged campus,” she says.

Biggest Challenge?

The biggest challenge she has faced so far was developing the language to advocate for herself. She knew she had the skill set to be successful in a business or higher education setting, but she had to learn how to communicate those during interviews and demonstrate that they were transferable through action.

For example, her understanding of how to approach fieldwork contributes to the way she advises students. She reflects on her own identity and assumptions, tries to ask questions that encourage students to self-identity their goals, and supports them by sharing her own experiences.

Also, her position is within a private organization but is based in a public higher education institution. She really had to commit to understanding all stakeholders and balance everyone’s perspectives and priorities.
