Science Café | Popped Secret: the Mysterious Origin of Corn, Nov. 2

Science Café presents popcorn and a movie—”Popped Secret: the Mysterious Origin of Corn”—on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 5 p.m. in the Baker Center Front Room.

It’s enjoyed in theaters, ball parks and at parties; it’s everyone’s 9,000-year-old snack. Popcorn was first made from teosinte, a wild grass and corn’s oldest ancestor, more than 9,700 years ago.  But with a hard kernel shell, the original version was not dentist recommended; it could break your teeth. Domestication has yielded bigger, sweeter and more colorful corn.

Ohio University’s Café Series screen this documentary about the history of the grain, produced by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. “Evidence from genetics supports archeological findings pinpointing corn’s origins to a very particular time and place in Mexico,” according to the film’s website.
