The Ohio University Graduate Student Senate hosts a leadership event to commemorate the life of Sen. George Voinovich on Nov. 1 at 6:30 P.M. in the Walter Rotunda.
There will be light refreshments from Village Bakery at the panel. Doors open at 6 p.m. in Walter Rotunda for a brief reception. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to interact with the panelists. The discussion begins at 6:30.
Panelists Cara Dingus Brook, Greg Browning, and David Wilhelm will talk of their memories of Voinovich.
“We wanted to take the opportunity to remember the late Sen. Voinovich as he was a dedicated leader who had distinct ties to the OHIO community,” said Graduate Student Senate President Ian Armstrong, a Chemistry graduate student. In having this conversation, the panelists will discuss what makes a great leader and what OHIO students should do to gain leadership skills.
Brook graduated from Ohio University’s Honors Tutorial College in 2003 and then graduated in 2006 from the Voinovich School with an MPA. Brook was Sen. Voinovich’s chief of staff from 2004-07. Since 2007, she has been the president and CEO of the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio. She will bring a philanthropic perspective to the panel.
Browning graduated from Ohio University in 1972. He is currently the president and owner of Capital Partners. From 1999-2007, he served as a member of the Ohio University Board of Trustees. In the 1990s, he worked for the office of then-Ohio Gov. Voinovich, working on education and health care, among other issues. Browning is an Executive in Residence at the Voinovich School. Browning brings state government as well as private business experience to the OHIO Leaders panel.
Wilhelm graduated from Ohio University in 1977 with a B.A. in Government from the College of Arts & Sciences. He was the campaign manager for the Clinton/Gore presidential campaign in 1992. After the election, he was the chair of the Democratic National Committee in Ohio. Wilhelm is currently Partner and Chief Strategy Officer at Hecate Energy, an alternative energy company. He will provide insight on how leaders can position themselves to promote sustainable work.
This is the first event this year hosted by GSS. Alex Burke, Vice President of Finance of GSS, said, “Graduate Student Senate is excited to host this panel of talented leaders for all students at OHIO to learn from.”
