Dr. Melissa Figueroa, Assistant Professor of Spanish, presented a paper on “Theater Reminiscences: The Politics of Memory after the Expulsion of the Moriscos” at the annual meeting of the Middle East Studies Association in Boston.
The paper explored how the Moriscos—descendants of Muslims in Spain who were forced to convert to Christianity at the end of the 15th century and who were expelled to North Africa at the beginning of the 17th century—were able to strengthen their sense of community in places without a strong theater tradition via theater reminiscences.
This year, Figueroa has presented her research at the American Comparative Literature Association Annual Meeting (ACLA), the Renaissance Society of America Annual Conference (RSA), the Symposium of the Association for Hispanic Classical Theater (AHCT), and the Kentucky Foreign Language Conference (KFLC).
