The Innovative Environmental Monitoring Technology Symposium, Oct. 17-18 in the Baker Center, features a number of speakers in different fields all interested in environmental monitoring. Participants from industry, universities, non-government organizations, federal and state agencies, cities and counties, community members, and all who are interested in using technology to solve monitoring problems are encouraged to attend.

Environmental monitoring expert Dr. Margaret Palmer, Director of the National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center, presents the keynote address on Oct. 17 titled “Directions in Environmental Monitoring: from Pattern to Process and to Social Outcome.” Palmer’s keynote, at 6 p.m. in Schoonover 450, is open for the public to attend. She will discuss how improving the effectiveness of environmental interventions requires changes in how they are monitored. Palmer is from the University of Maryland, where she is a professor of entomology and biology.

Symposium topics include monitoring nutrient runoff into streams, climate variability affecting acid mine drainage impaired streams, harnessing education and technology for environmental detection and more. Speakers represent universities and companies from across the state. A complete list of sessions and speakers is available online.
