This past summer, Sallie Cohen interned with the Jewish Family Service in Cincinnati, a nonprofit social service agency that serves all individuals without regard to religion, race, age, disability, sexual orientation, national origin, or ability to pay.

She worked closely with staff and assisted with elderly care. The internship gave her insight into new areas of interest she hadn’t explored before.

“After the internship I found that I would be really interested in social work and nonprofits,” she said. “Through the experience I figured out that I want to work in elderly care.”

These revelations are the point of internships. Even upperclassmen are often unsure of what they want to do after their college career, and an internship is a great learning experience.

Cohen is a senior at Ohio University double majoring in Sociology-Criminology and Psychology.

Finding an Internship

There are many ways to obtain an internship position. In Cohen’s case, she learned of her internship through networking with a mutual friend.

Networking is an important takeaway from internships and can even help you get one, so it is never too early to start.

The Career & Leadership Development Center can help by way of the Bobcat CareerLink, a good place to start. The CLDC helps students connect with employers through online job and internship postings, on-campus interviews, career events, and more.

Internships are a defining moment for many college students’ lives and may be the key to a great job and a successful career outside of college.

When looking for an internship, it is important to choose something that interests you but remember you are not looking for your dream job. It is a good idea to send out ten or more applications in order to land a spot that best suits you.

Overall Cohen’s experience was like that of many college students.

“I got an internship that interested me, was close to home, and I enjoyed it.”
