On Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. the Food Studies Theme and the English Department hosted a reading by essayist Irina Dumitrescu of the University of Bonn. Dumitrescu captivated the gathering with her compelling prose in her talk titled, “The Dark Side of Food Writing.”
Her talk is followed by a reception and is sponsored by the English Department and the Food Studies theme.
Dumitrescu teaches medieval literature at the University of Bonn and writes about literature, food, immigration, and dance. In addition to scholarly work, she has published literary essays in the Atlantic, Yale Review, Southwest Review, Petits Propos Culinaires, and the Washington Post. Her essay, “My Father and the Wine,” was recently nominated for the James Beard Foundation’s MFK Fisher Distinguished Writing Award and chosen for the Best American Essays 2016.
