Attending an event or conference where you are expected to network can be intimidating. Just like most skills, networking requires practice and strategy. According to Fast Company (Vozza, 2015) there are eight things you can do to make the most of your time at a networking opportunity:
- Figure out who you want to meet beforehand.
- Perfect your elevator speech.
- Show up early.
- Stand under the lights.
- Mingle near the food.
- Approach speakers before their talk.
- Ask for an introduction.
- Focus on others.
After the event, it is important that you follow-up with the people you met while networking. If you collected business cards, take the time to email them to reconnect and/or connect with them on LinkedIn.
