The Department of Geological Sciences Colloquium Series presents Dr. Andrew Czaja on “Life in the Archean: Increasing the diversity” on Oct. 28 at 4:10 p.m. in Clippinger 205.
Czaja is an Assistant Professor in the University of Cincinnati Department of Geology.
Abstract: Although the geologic record is extremely sparse in the Archean Eon, more and more fossils are being found from this ancient period in Earth History. This talk will discuss the known record as well as recent advances in expanding the record, both in terms of organisms found and types ancient habitats that hosted them. It will also cover modern analytical techniques—Raman spectroscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and secondary ion mass spectrometry—that allow us to more confidently identify ancient fossil microorganisms.
Upcoming Colloquia
Dorothy Sack of the Ohio University Department of Geography on “No Cursing, Crying, No Cookies: Women Trailblazers in Geomorphology” on Nov. 4 at 4:10 p.m. in Clippinger 205.
Davey Wright of The Ohio State University on “Unifying fossils and phylogenetic biology to study evolution in “deep time” on Nov. 18 at 4:10 p.m. in Clippinger 205.
