On Tuesday, Oct. 4, the Wealth and Poverty theme launches a campus-wide food drive to celebrate World Food Day, which is observed on Oct 16 every year to remember the founding spirit of the Food and Agriculture Organization.
The organization declares World Food Day to be “a day of action against hunger.” The Wealth and Poverty theme at Ohio University declares “ending hunger starts with OHIO!”
The Wealth and Poverty food drive collects non-perishable items for Good Works, which will distribute them to Athens residents who are in need. This is the theme’s fall service and outreach activity, and students in CAS 1300x Themes in Action: Wealth and Poverty each will host a mini-drive in their residence hall or apartment building. Wealth and Poverty faculty and staff members also will collect food throughout the campus.
Collection boxes will be placed in all colleges, departments and buildings across the campus. Email Yeong Kim at kimy1@ohio.edu to have a box or two be placed in your department.
“Because when it comes to hunger, the only acceptable number in the world is zero,” says the World Food Day website. Building on its success last year, the Wealth and Poverty theme continues to help eradicate hunger here in Athens and beyond.
