From 2010-16, alum Garrett Bunyak ’10M established a career as a professional recruiter, working within and consulting for companies of many sizes, from Fortune 500 firms to small local companies.
“In 2016, I have directly leveraged my master’s training in Sociology at OHIO to begin an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Science Technology and Society studies in Atlanta at Georgia Institute of Technology, a leading research university committed to improving the human condition through advanced science and technology,” he says.
“The Sociology program at Ohio University is filled with many passionate and enthusiastic educators and scientists—and many of the faculty were influential in my decision to return to a Ph.D. program after several years in a professional setting” he adds.
“My experience in the College of Arts & Sciences at Ohio University provided a great deal of training that I was able to leverage throughout my life and career since graduation,” says Bunyak. “And it contributed to my happiness and success in all of my roles since leaving in 2010.
“In an academic world where many students choose early on a highly specific course of training for a particular professional role, I found that sociology provides a way of thinking about the world beyond the narrow viewpoint of the individual, of a particular field of study or career.
“I would highly recommend students of all majors consider taking as many sociology courses as possible to help understand the ways social forces influence their individual fields of study. The critical thinking skills will be immediately valuable and will continue to pay dividends throughout their careers.”
