Registration is open for Startup Weekend Athens, hosted by the Ohio University Innovation Center Oct. 21-23. The event helps individuals with interests in industries such as information technology, design, engineering, business and manufacturing develop a startup company.
Participants can pitch ideas and vote for their favorites Friday night. Teams form around the top concepts and spend Saturday and Sunday developing a business plan with the help of professional coaches. On Sunday evening, teams present their startup ideas to a panel of judges, who award prizes to the top three.
Startup Weekend events are held globally to foster entrepreneurship. Ohio University’s Innovation Center has hosted six events—which have attracted participants from around the state and region—since 2012.
“Both globally and locally, Startup Weekends have fostered the launch of viable, profitable companies which produce jobs and generate economic development. Our ecosystem also believes in the value of Startup Weekend for education. To that end, even participants without a business idea are encouraged to attend to learn about the process of starting a company,” said Stacy Strauss, associate director of the Innovation Center.
The October event will be facilitated by Startup Weekend winner Daniel Johnsen, founder of The Recovery Station, a gym vending kiosk company based in Kentucky. Guest speaker will be Christopher Crawford, an assistant professor of strategy and entrepreneurship in Ohio University’s College of Business. Judges will include regional entrepreneurs, angel investors, venture capitalists and service providers.
Tickets are $50 and include registration and meals Friday night through Sunday night. Register online.
Event sponsors include the Ohio University Innovation Center and Center for Entrepreneurship, Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, Business Remixed/Athens County Economic Development Council, WesBanco and TechGROWTH Ohio.
