Sara Berens, Academic Advisor and Retention Specialist

Academic advising is a valuable resource for students; especially those who may be struggling academically, or first generation college students who may not have been given all the ins and outs of college life.

Sara Berens is an academic adviser and retention specialist who works with these specific students. Being a first-generation student herself, she thoroughly enjoys helping other first generation students go on to be successful.

Berens has been working at Ohio University full-time for three years as an academic adviser and teaches a UC 1900 course, but she has been in Athens for about 10 to 11 years. She grew up in Lancaster, received a bachelor’s in fine arts for painting and drawing at Ohio University, an MFA in painting and drawing from Ohio State, and an M.Ed., from Ohio University.

Having grown up and gone to school in Ohio, Berens laughed and exclaimed, “I’ve been traveling up and down 33 my whole life!”

When she is not advising or teaching, Berens enjoys traveling, biking, going to art museums, painting her house, and eating at Casa with her husband. When she wants to relax, she enjoys spending time on the patio behind Bentley and sitting near Emereti Park. She is also part of the first generation student-mentoring program, where she receives a new mentee each year (special shout out to the first generation mentoring program!).

Above all, Berens loves working with her students by helping them succeed academically and find success later in life.
