The History Department welcomes a new faculty member to the Athens campus this Fall 2016.
Dr. Victoria Lee, Assistant Professor, joins the History Department after serving as a 2014-16 Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, Germany. She holds a Ph.D. in the History of Science from Princeton University. Lee’s research focuses on the role of Japan in 20th and 21st century science and technology. Her publications include:
- “The Microbial Production of Expertise in Meiji Japan,” Osiris 2nd Ser. 33 (Forthcoming 2018).
- “Mold Cultures: Traditional Industry and Microbial Studies in Early Twentieth-Century Japan,” in New Perspectives on the History of Life Sciences and Agriculture, eds. Denise Phillips and Sharon Kingsland (Cham: Springer, 2015), 231-252.
During Fall 2016, Lee is offering two courses: “HIST 2905: Technology in World History” and “HIST 3481/5481: Modern Japan.” The HIST 2905 course explores the ways in which technology and human society have shaped each other from prehistory to the 20th century. The HIST 3481/5481 course provides a survey of modern Japanese history.
During Spring 2017, Lee will offer:
- CAS 2405: Knowing What We Know
- HIST 3500: Science and Society in the Modern World
