Welcome back new and returning Bobcats! We’re going to kick off another year of Advising Tip of the Week with…majors.
How to pick ’em, how to declare ’em, and how to stick with ’em.
First things first, you need to do some soul searching and exploration because no matter how many online quizzes you take to determine your major, you still won’t get to the right answer. Why? Because those types of tools aren’t very intuitive.
But do you know what is? You. You’re the only person who can determine your major, and if you’re looking beyond yourself for the ultimate answer you’re doing it wrong.
So while you can ask your adviser, parents, friends, grocery clerk or second cousin half removed for advice, and they all have good advice, they shouldn’t be picking your major for you.
This is because everyone has different interests and goals, and if you’re choosing a major to please someone else you’re going to risk failing. That’s because you’re not seeking to fulfill your own interests, and you’re not going to be very happy with the classes you’re taking toward your major.
- So start by exploring classes that sound interesting.
- Join student organizations that pertain to a major you’ve been thinking about.
- Talk to upperclassmen about their experiences.
- Schedule a one-on-one with an adviser in an area you’re interested in.
- Attend a lecture on campus, etc.
You should also check out your available major options in the OHIO catalog or check out Arts & Sciences majors.
