“I really love teaching Sociology of Murder the most because it provides me the opportunity to talk about my research interests and teach students who are so eager to learn about the topic,” says Lauren Wright ’14M ’10B.
Lauren Wright graduated with a B.A. in Sociology-Criminology and Psychology, then an M.A. in Sociology from the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio University. She went on to the doctoral program at the University of Central Florida, where in addition to the Sociology of Murder, she also taught Criminology during the year and is teaching Gangs and Society during this summer.
“There is so much you can do with this class and so many things you can discuss. I love seeing students learn and apply the concepts from class to real-life cases and seeing them learn the truth behind statistics involving school shootings and serial killers, etc.,” says Wright.
“I think it’s important for students to know how to differentiate between what they hear on the news and what the real facts are.”
Media Constructs Reality
“My dissertation is going to be focused on newspaper coverage of race involved in serial rape cases to determine how the media constructs a reality for its viewers and how that can be perpetuated by law enforcement and the criminal justice system.
“What I love most…”
“The thing I love most about teaching is interacting with the students.
“I love having an open dialogue and discussing important topics and connecting with them via shared interests in the topic of sociology.
“The biggest joy for me is seeing my students take concepts they’ve learned in class and applying them to their lives or to cases being talked about on the news.
“I want learning to be an enjoyable experience for my students.”
