Susan Markel earned her M.A. in Sociology in 2007 from the College of Arts & Sciences at Ohio University and is now an Assistant Professor at Zane State College in Zanesville, OH.
Survey Project with Babcock University in Nigeria
One of her Race and Ethnicity classes has been working on a survey project with a class of computer science students at Babcock University in Ogun State, Nigeria.
Both sets of students are excited to have the additional opportunity to develop email relationships and learn about a new culture as they complete a brief research paper on current and future social media trends in both the U.S. and Nigeria.
Cross-Discipline Collaborative Program
Additionally, she was instrumental in creating one of the first faculty communities of practice on the her campus; this involves a cross-discipline collaborative program focused on enhancing the teaching experience and creating a more harmonious learning environment.
“The challenge of blending current, newsworthy topics and historical background and applying it to everyday life is well worth it when a student has an “aha” moment.
“I also enjoy when students bring issues to my attention—especially former students. It is gratifying to know they are still looking at the world through the sociological lens!”
