“I really love being able to work with people from the community and provide guidance and support on a daily basis,” says Becky Filar, who graduated in 2006 with a BA in Sociology-Criminology from the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio University.
She lives in Athens and works as a Victim Advocate for the Athens County Prosecutor’s Office, where she has enjoyed working for almost three years.
“Being an advocate allows me to be a support person during difficult times—when folks feel the most alone and they’re lost navigating the judicial system I am there to explain the process and help them be as comfortable as possible.”
Becky acts as a liaison between victims and the prosecutor and she ensures their voices are heard and works to keep their expectations in mind as criminal cases are resolved.
In her role, she gets to work alongside law enforcement agencies, attorney’s, Judges, and various county resources.
“Athens is a great community, we know how to pull together for the best interest of those affected by crime and that is why I love what I do every day.”
Becky spoke at the Sociology and Anthropology Department Awards Gala on April 8.
