History Grad Students Selected for RAND Corporation Summer Associate Program

Matt Johnson and Adam Givens, both Ph.D. students in the History Department at Ohio University, have been selected as 2016 Graduate Summer Research Associates at the RAND Corporation. RAND is a non-profit non-partisan research organization that provides research and analysis to the United States Armed Forces.

The Summer Research Associate Program receives about 600 applications each year for the just over 40 positions available, all of which require at least two years of PhD coursework. The selection process is based on matching Summer Associates and their specific skill sets with researchers and their project needs. Dr. Ingo Trauschweizer, Associate Professor of History at Ohio University, serves as the academic advisor to both Johnson and Givens.

This will be Johnson’s second consecutive summer working at RAND’s headquarters in Santa Monica, California. His research there forms part of a project focusing on the unit organization development of the US Air Force. Johnson earned his M.A. in History from Ohio University in 2014, and his undergraduate degree in History and Geography from Virginia Tech in 2011.G

Givens is assigned to RAND’s Washington, DC office to research US Army organizational issues. His dissertation examines the United States Army’s aviation force from 1945 to the present. Titled “On the Wing: Army Aviation from the Cold War to Present Day,” the project considers the military-industrial complex and its impact on the aviation industry, Army Aviation’s organization, and the institution’s relationship with the government. Givens earned his M.A. in History from Wright State University in 2011 and his B.A. in History from Ohio University in 2008.
