The Athens Algebra Seminar presents Erik Hieta-Aho of Ohio University on Thursday, March 10, at 4:35 p.m. in Morton 127.
He will discuss “Recognizing rational functions amongst power series.”
Abstract: The talk will cover a few topics which are introduced in a paper by Hou, Lopez-Permouth, and Parra-Avila. The main focus will be on the characterization of (formal) rational power series over a commutative ring and the periodicity of coefficients. The main theorem to be discussed will be a characterization of a periodic ring R, which is defined as a ring in which all rational power series over R have an eventually periodic sequence of coefficients. In this theorem it is shown that a ring R is periodic if R is an integral extension over for some positive .
