The Environmental & Plant Biology Colloquium Series presents Dr. Melanie Schori on “Embryology in Cardiopteris” on Friday, Feb. 12, at 11:50 a.m. in Porter 104.
Schori is a Visiting Scholar in the Environmental & Plant Biology Department and an Ohio University alumnus, earning a Ph.D. in 2010.
Abstract: Embryology, which focuses on reproductive development from gametes to embryos, is incompletely known for most plants. In particular, megasporogenesis, megagametogenesis, and ovule development are often overlooked. Prior to 2002, no embryological studies of Cardiopteris had been published, and the first report was met with skepticism due to several unusual features. My colleague Dong-Rui Kong and I have confirmed these features and discovered a new kind of seed coat, not recorded from any other angiosperm. My presentation will include an overview of embryology in typical angiosperms, an introduction to Cardiopteris, and a discussion of the genus’ embryological features.
