The Center of Ring Theory presents the Tutorial Lecture Series on Tropical Algebra with Dr. Louis Rowen of Bar-Ilan University, Ramat-Gan, Israel.
The Tutorial Lecture Series on Tropical Algebra is Tuesday, Feb. 2; Thursday, Feb. 4; and Tuesday, Feb. 9, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Morton 122.
This series presents a structural approach to the algebraic underpinning of tropical geometry, with the goal of providing a framework for applying traditional methods of algebra to this new subject. The first talk indicates how supertropical algebra provides a robust foundation for tropical algebraic geometry, in which the classical Zariski correspondence plays a major role…. The second lecture continues with the linear algebra theory, showing that the rank of a matrix, suitably defined, equals both the column rank and the row rank….The third lecture introduces a way of artificially providing negation, in a manner similar to the construction of Z from N, but with one crucial difference necessitated by the fact that the max-plus semiring is not additively cancellative!
