The Athens Algebra Seminar presents Javier Ronquillo of Ohio University discussing “A quick introduction to Banach Algebras and Gelfand Transform” on Thursday, Feb. 25, from 4:35 to 5:30 p.m. in Morton 127.
Abstract: I will talk about Banach Algebras and how some of their properties allow us to define functions in the Banach Algebra using Taylor Series. After that I will talk about the Gelfand transform which lets us represent Banach algebras as algebras of continuous functions from a compact space to the complex numbers. In the case that the Banach Algebra is a C*-algebra then the Gelfand transform ends up giving us a representation that is isometric isomorphism.
