Psychology Students and Faculty Earn Prestigious Awards, National Acclaim

In the past academic year, Psychology Department students and faculty earned prestigious awards and national acclaim including recognition by the American Psychological Association, the National Science Foundation, and right here at OHIO!

Student Accomplishments

  • Alex Holdaway and Clifton Mixon (Ph.D. students in Child Clinical Psychology) received the 2015 American Psychological Association Dissertation Research Award.
  • Mikayla Barcus (Ph.D. student in Cognitive Psychology) was awarded a Women of Mathematical Psychology (WoMP) Travel and Networking Award from the National Science Foundation.
  • Ashley Howell (Ph.D.  student in Adult Clinical Psychology) was awarded the Donald Clippinger Fellowship, one of five fellowships awarded by the Graduate College to Ohio University graduate students.
  • Craig Spiel (Ph.D. student in Child Clinical Psychology), Lisa Paik (Ph.D. student in Industrial/Organizational Psychology), and Clifton Mixon (Ph.D. student in Child Clinical Psychology) received the Student Enhancement Awards from Ohio to support their dissertation research.
  • Essence Rivers (a senior psychology major) received funding through the Provost Undergraduate Research Fund (PURF) to conduct her research on the relationship between emotional intelligence and the effects of ostracism.
  • Phoenix Crane, Sara Springer, Ashley Romeo, Mackenzie Yonek, Natalia Sanchez, Diana Chaidez, Elana Gloger, Jennifer Cyr, Bradley Osuna, Miyah Grant, and Natalie Stepp received department undergraduate scholarships funded by donations from our alumni and friends.

Faculty Accomplishments

  • Steve Evans was elected a Fellow of Division 53 (Clinical Child Psychology) of the American Psychological Association.
  • Chris France was chosen as the 2014 Ohio University Distinguished Professor. This prestigious lifetime designation is bestowed on one Ohio University professor each year and is given for “exceptional research and scholarly or artistic achievement.”
  • Claudia Gonzalez-Vallejo was appointed to the editorial board of another APA journal, Decision.
  • Sandra Hoyt received a 2014-15 Dean’s Outstanding Teaching Award from OHIO.
  • Julie Owens received a grant from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) through the U.S. Department of Education for her work on monitoring social behavior through web based service and was named Associate Editor for the APA journal, Psychological Assessment. She also was invited to join the Society for the Study of School Psychology.
  • Ryan Shorey received the 2015 American Psychological Foundation’s Visionary Fund Grant and the Deborah L. Rhatigan Early Career Award for Excellence in Violence Research.
  • Jeff Vancouver was chosen to be an invited speaker at the 26th Annual APS Convention in San Francisco.
  • Peggy Zoccola received the 2014-15 Jeanette G. Grasselli Brown Faculty Teaching Award in the Social Sciences from OHIO.
