Julia LaComb, a freshman Philosophy Pre-Law major, has been selected to be a part of the third cohort of Margaret Boyd Scholars.

An Athens native, she loved the atmosphere at OHIO. Her mother was a first generation student at Ohio University, and LaComb decided to follow in her footsteps and remain close to home.

“I’m established here and…it’s a happy place,” LaComb said.

LaComb always intended to have a major in Pre-Law, with law school as the ultimate goal. She decided Philosophy Pre-Law was a perfect fit.

“I looked at different majors with Pre-Law attached to them, and philosophy was the most attractive option,” LaComb said. She also plans to keep her options open. “I wouldn’t hate to be a lawyer, but I want to focus more toward communications and work on political campaigns…. I really want to go into the communications part of campaigns and put my ideas out there,” she said.

Her interest in the Margaret Boyd Scholars program began when she was still in high school and taking post-secondary classes at Ohio University. When she learned about the program, which seeks to inspire and encourage undergraduate women to become engaged, confident, and connected leaders at Ohio University and beyond, she became intrigued.

Pursuant to the program requirements, LaComb applied during fall semester of her first year. As part of her application, she was required to write an essay on a positive female role model in her life, that was not a family member. She decided to write hers on her post-secondary Ohio University English professor, although she stated that “most of the women I’ve met and talked to have been great, positive role models.” Indeed, she finds the Women’s Center here to be very well-established and a great resource as well. Along with the Margaret Boyd Scholars program, LaComb is also involved with Title IX and the Global Leadership Center.

Being one of the Margaret Boyd Scholars, she will be enrolled in a seminar class next semester. Then, during her sophomore year, she will live in Bryan Hall with the Margaret Boyd Scholars and has hopes of serving as a Resident Assistant. During her junior year, she hopes to study abroad as part of the program. Finally, during her senior year, she will take a fourth-year capstone seminar. LaComb is most excited about traveling and expanding her horizons, as well as serving as a mentor to other young women in the program.
