HTC Calls for Faculty Proposals for Research Apprentices

In partnership with several other units across the Athens campus, the Honors Tutorial College is continuing to administer a campus-wide undergraduate research apprenticeship program for the summer of 2016 and academic year 2016-17.

The Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program provides opportunities for students to expand their research skills by supporting faculty research. The goal is the creation of a lively intellectual experience that is mutually beneficial.

Faculty in all academic disciplines will be considered for research apprenticeships. Tutoring in HTC is not a requirement for participating in this program.

Approximately 30 faculty proposals for apprenticeships will be selected by an interdisciplinary faculty committee. Those selected will be funded for one of the following options:

  • Hire a student to work for 28 hours a week for the first summer term.
  • Hire a student to work for 28 hours a week for the second summer term.
  • Hire a student to work for 28 hours a week for the 10 weeks in the summer.
  • Hire a student to work for 10 hours a week for the 30 weeks of the 2016-17 academic year.
  • Hire a student to work for 10 hours a week for the 15 weeks of one semester, either Fall 2016 or Spring 2017.

Students will be paid $10 an hour for their work. Faculty members do not receive additional compensation beyond having the student work on his or her research project.

While the work that research apprentices undertake may be independent in nature, substantive oversight must be provided by the faculty member. If your plans involve spending a significant amount of time away from campus, please do not submit a proposal for that time period.

Eligibility

All faculty members on the Athens campus who have not been awarded an apprentice within the past two years are eligible to submit proposals. Students need not work for a faculty member from their own college or major.

Application Procedure

Faculty members wishing to apply should e-mail a CV and the Faculty Proposal/Working Agreement Form to Laura Schaeffer, Director of Honors Enrichment Programs at schaeffe@ohio.edu or 740-593-2725, no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22, 2016. Notification of funding status will be sent in early February. Descriptions of the funded projects will be made available to students across the Athens campus in mid-February. Student applicants will interview with the respective funded faculty members, who will make the final selection for their own research apprentices

Faculty applications are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22, 2016. They cannot accept late applications.
