Award-winning fiction writer and poet Crystal Wilkinson reads from her work Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Walter Hall Rotunda. A reception follows the event.
The author of Blackberries, Blackberries, which won the 2002 Chaffin Award for Appalachian Literature, and Water Street, Wilkinson has received national attention both for her short stories and poetry. Water Street was a finalist for both the U.K.’s Orange Prize for Fiction and the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, and her short story “Holler” was recently released as an e-single on Amazon.
Wilkinson is a founding member of the Affrilachian Poets, a multicultural writing collective. A Kentucky native, she has been described as the “godmother of creative writing in Lexington.” Wilkinson teaches writing and literature as the Appalachian Writer in Residence at Berea College. She and her partner, poet and artist Ron Davis, own Wild Fig Books & Coffee in Lexington.
Wilkinson’s reading will mark the second visit by a Resident Writer during the 2015-16 academic year. Hosted by the Creative Writing Program, the event is also sponsored by Arts for Ohio.
