A&S Spotlight features Aerial Boggs, a Marine and Wildlife Biology and Anthropology, major, and a College of Arts & Sciences Student Ambassador.
If you could tell your pre-OHIO self one thing, what would it be?
Don’t be scared to change; it’s going to happen. The only person who can choose your own destiny is you. Also, appreciate the dining hall food because one day you’re not going to have it.
Why did you choose to study Marine and Wildlife Biology and Anthropology?
I just really enjoy helping others (whether they’re in our species or not). I have loved animals and found biology interesting since (I was) a child. I began as a Pre-Veterinary Medicine major but decided I wanted to take a more research-based work, as my long-term career goal is to be a zoologist.
What has been your favorite part of being a student at Ohio University so far?
I have enjoyed getting the opportunity to be involved in so much, but I really love being in the classroom. I get so excited knowing I control my own future and decide my own path. I feel like the possibilities are endless here at OHIO.
What is the most interesting class, or your favorite class that you have taken so far? What makes the class stand out in your mind?
My favorite class was BIOS 3100 with Dr. Soichi Tanda, not because of Genetics (although I did love it) but because Dr. Tanda made my learning experience so much better. He was always willing to help and you just kind of had fun in such a hard class.
What drew you to Ohio University?
I wanted a place that felt like home. All the bricks make me feel like I’m right back there (even being two and a half hours away). I fell in love with the beauty of the campus but also the friendliness of the Bobcat community.
Any tips or advice for other students?
College is tough, it’s scary. But, don’t go through your four years here in fear. Rely on others, converse and have fun! If you open your eyes to the world around you, you’ll realize that OHIO is one of the best choices you could have made.
What the Ambassadors are, and what they do?
We are an organization that aides in recruitment and retention as well as providing peer mentoring to those in the College of Arts & Sciences. We are dedicated to enhancing the college experience for students in our college through social engagement, community service, student-faculty interaction, college representation opportunities, hosting academic and success workshops.
Why are the Ambassadors important to the College of Arts & Sciences?
We provide a voice from the students to the faculty, providing a new perspective as we have our feet on the ground. We are also knowledgeable in our college requirements, and we relay this information to students. The Ambassadors make it easier for the students to relate to the faculty and even students relating to other students about the importance of their college experience.
Why did you become an Ambassador?
I became an Ambassador because I really wanted to represent my college and have my voice be heard. I’m a very enthusiastic person, and having the opportunity to speak to potential students about how great OHIO is was something that really interested me. I also loved the fact that I began my own networking and starting communicating with faculty, helping me get my foot in the door to the best college experience.
For A&S students who might be interested, what is the process involved in becoming an Ambassador?
Come and join us for our weekly meetings in Baker 239 every Monday from 6 to 7 p.m! You may also get in contact with any of our executives, especially Courtney Stephan at cs052913@ohio.edu.
