Café Conversation presents photographer Stan Alost on “Nobody Wants to See That: Images that Disturb and Our Freedom to Know” on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 5 p.m., in the Baker Center Front Room.
Alost, Ohio University professor of visual communication, talks about the ethics and politics of photojournalism, noting that photos help people “understand the world around us and the things we don’t want to understand.” He thinks sometimes it is best to not show the picture.
“You know that picture from 9/11 with the man jumping. Everyone knows what picture I am talking about, and I don’t have to show it. I have it in my head, I don’t really ever want to see it again,” Alost said.
Café events are free and open to students, faculty and staff. Café Conversations and Science Cafés are both venues for students to share their interests informally during a conversation exchange in a friendly setting. The Science Cafe is hosted by Dr. Sarah Wyatt, Professor of Environmental & Plant Biology and Vice President of the Ohio University Chapter of Sigma Xi. The two series are sponsored by the Ohio University chapter of Sigma Xi and the Office of the Vice President for Research. Find the Science Café on Facebook and Twitter.
