Ohio University alum Ryan Phillips ’00 talks on “From Bobcat to Broadcast Meteorologist” on Friday, Sept. 11, from 4:10-5 p.m. in Clippinger 119 as part of the Geography Colloquium Series.
Phillips earned a B.S. in Geography—Meteorology from the College of Arts & Sciences and now works as a broadcast meteorologist at WTVJ in Miami.
Abstract: From an unexpected internship to an unorthodox approach launching a career in meteorology, Phillips spring-boarded quickly from Ohio University to major-market television. He will speak about his winding road from the halls of Clippinger Laboratory to the studios of multiple TV stations in the last decade. See some of the biggest weather events he’s covered, the demands of broadcasting, and how local weather is helping keep television viewing relevant in the mobile age.
About Ryan Phillips: Phillips is the morning and mid-day meteorologist at NBC network-owned station WTVJ in Miami, FL. A graduate of Ohio University in 2000, he has worked on-air for the last 15 years in Kearney, NE, Fort Myers, FL,and Miami. He holds the Seal of Approval from the National Weather Association. Through the National Weather Association, Phillips funds a national scholarship for undergraduate college students majoring in meteorology. He also holds the designation as a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist from the American Meteorological Society. He lives in both Miramar, FL, and New York City, NY, with his wife, Zena, and daughter, Samara.
